It is not quite there yet... still a work in progress, but hopefully it will put a new slant to those silly monsters that like to hide under beds. And who doesn't enjoy a good bedtime story?

Working on some new illustrations between projects, and this guy is one of my favorites so far. Really happy with the color and texture, plus I did it as a personal challenge of sorts since I am not the biggest fan of large reptiles. :)

Happy New Year! I love the start of a new year... all those creative possibilities and opportunities. While 2011 had so many wonderful projects come my way, I am hoping to harness that creative momentum and keep it going through 2012 and beyond.
At the moment I am half way through my latest childrens book project which will be published later this year, and have been picking up other freelance assignments... one of which I have a sneak peak above.
Last but certainly not least I wanted to again share a few great resources with you... if you have not visited either of these sites, do check them out. My new "Dragonfly Water Porfolio" & Moleskin cover (handmade by artbeco.etsy.com)

Look what arrived in the mail today! I had read about this wonderful Etsy shop on SCBWI when a member had written an article about a portfolio she had purchased to showcase her work.

Dragonfly button.... just gorgeous!

Upon visiting artbeco I fell in love with the portfolios & moleskin covers. From the batik prints right down to the eclectic selection of buttons used to close them. I placed a custom order for a design with a stunning dragonfly button. My very favorite winged creatures... dragonflies & butterflies, so the design certainly spoke to the artist in me.

The owner of artbeco, Beckett, did not disappoint. The portfolio is even more beautiful in person. It arrived quickly and was packaged with care, including a few surprises that made me feel like a child on Christmas morning. The cover wrap has lots of pockets for storage inside and fits the portfolio perfectly.

I thought to share this wonderful find since so many of "my blog family" are creative folks who truly value the quality and craftsmanship of buying handmade. Another fun prompt at Illustration Friday this week, and I decided to use one of my favorite Posey illustrations for it. I can relate to a slow start in the morning. Once I have been able to sit and enjoy my cup of coffee, I feel better prepared to handle the day and get the creative juices flowing.

Wonderful prompt at Illustration Friday this week... so I made the time with this quick watercolor illustration. Seeing that autumn is in full swing here in New Hampshire and my boys adore jumping in piles of leaves... well you can picture where I am headed. :)
While my creative thoughts and mommy thoughts are sometimes scattered, I would much rather illustrate the point with this delightful fellow (who so obviously) is about to enjoy the bounty of a beautiful autumn day and a pile of colorful leaves.

Just a quick, little, hinty, glimpse of what is on my desk at the moment. My next children's book project is so up my alley and I feel incredibly lucky to be illustrating such a sweet, positive and uplifting story for children. Can't wait to share more... just happy to be moving into autumn in NH surrounded by butterflies, my muse and my lucky charm.

I was given the opportunity to write a guest post over on The Creative Penn (a great resource for people interested in book publishing/marketing). The author of the blog was interested in how authors who were planning to self-publish a story could find an illustrator. Understanding how this is a sensitive subject to many, I thought this would be a great opportunity to outline a few tips on children's book publishing - what goes into the production of a book, costs, time, etc - from my perspective as an illustrator. The article which ran last week seems to have met with some interesting responses. ;)

Summer is my favorite season. I am never more happy than sitting all warm and cozy in sunshine... preferably near a body of water and under a blue sky! :)
We've busy this summer - my sketch book is being toted around a lot - need to get those creative musings on paper whenever possible. Plus some great new creative happenings are on the horizon, so I need to keep the artistic ball rolling. Never mess with momentum!

Upcycled, painted inspirations

A quick post on this lovely Sunday. I am sorry for being delinquent of late, spring has been busy and I have been working hard at finalizing the childrens book, getting promotions updated and painting. Here are some of my favorite "mini paintings" that have come out of the studio. I call them "Pieces of Inspiration" and they truly are... I keep them nearby to remind me of the positive effects of art. A very dear friend told me that surrounding myself with things that inspire me will keep me motivated and creatively charged. I am lucky to have this angel on my shoulder as she truly gave me the push I needed to keep digging deeper.

More animal sketches from my self-imposed 365 creative project. Already it is becoming a habit... sometimes spending 5 minutes on a quick rendering, other times longer. The important fact of the matter is the commitment to do it everyday - which I have done for 10 days now. Babysteps, I know, but rewarding nonetheless. A great side note - the sketches and renderings often lead to other forms of art or other purposes of art, so this project has become a stepping stone (of sorts) for me creatively in expanding into even more ideas and new pieces. For example today a did several sketches of animals and insects, working on ideas that I plan to try out in polymer clay. It is a process I have not done in the past... 2D to 3D but one that is really fun to see come to fruition.

Here are my first three days worth of Animal inspired pieces with my 365 day personal challenge.
I began with these small polymer clay birds and then added artistic wire... thought they might make pretty pendants (eventually), then I moved on to a watercolor on day two, and today decided to do a rough sketch with ballpoint pen on an envelope. This way something I did after graduating college, to try and entire AD's into opening my promotional mailers... old habits die hard I guess. ;)

Starting the week off right.

Monday, Monday.
Where. To. Begin.
I don't know about you, but in my mind, Monday looms like some great big, hairy, motivation stealing monster. So many projects... what to tackle first. Sketches? Laundry? Emails? Promotion? Errands?

One of the hardest things for me is to remain balanced (and I am not talking yoga). I walk the line daily, spreading myself between family, home, office, volunteering and... oh yeah, wait a minute... me!
Balance is an elusive creature. Followed in close second by the oh so finicky, Motivation and the all important, Inspiration.

As a result, I keep my eyes and ears open for items that will assist me in my quest for a Balanced Life. And here are a few things that I have recently come across and thought to share.
First is the blog Simple Mom. What a great source of inspiration for how to get organized. I am taking part in a challenge that begins today called Project:Simply. See for yourself... a great what to kick start your spring cleaning and a step in the right direction to a more organized home.

Next - a few books: Drawing Lab for Mixed-Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun and Writing Down Your Soul. (Both on Amazon or Barnes and Noble). I ordered both and can't wait to have them in hand.

And last but not least, I am going to step up to the plate and attempt a 365 day creative challenge. I have been in awe of so many of you who have already participated in one. Now it's my turn. Let's see if I can make such a commitment, to my art and myself. 7 days a week, no matter what - no matter where. Sounds fantastic and ummmm, a bit daunting. From what I've read, the best way to begin is to keep it simple and choose a subject or medium that is really enjoyable to you. I want to keep my medium open, so that left subject matter. After some thought, the one topic I kept coming back to was, animals. It's a broad subject, but something I have always held close to heart and certainly plenty of inspiration for 365 days of work.
Realistically, I can't post my daily efforts. I will be honest and won't fib if I miss a day... pinky swear. It will be fun to share with you what I come up with from piece #1 right on through to #365.

Looks like I caught Motivation by the tail, now I just have to hold on and enjoy the ride. :)

Clean & Duclutter the fun way!

I just read out this wonderful way to tackle spring cleaning and organize oneself in the process. SimpleMom is hosting Project:Simplify a five week commitment to help motivate, inspire and encourage! Each week a new home "hot spot" will be announced - you have a week to roll up those sleeves and improve that area. Then you post before and after photos to share in your accomplishment... plus visit other blogs to see what people have done in their own space.
I can't think of a better way to get some organized cleaning done.

How do you get your brushes clean?

If you are like me, then you love your paintbrushes. So, how well do you take care of them? AND more importantly, how well do you clean them? Brushes are an investment and with proper care can have a long, happy life. Here are some options (including a green solution) on how to properly care for your brushes.

In stores and online:

Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer (16oz $7.90 at dickblick.com)
cleans dried acrylics, oils, and alkyds with no damage to the brush head or loss of fibers. It can be used on natural or synthetic brushes. Effective within minutes for oil colors (hours for dried acrylics), and leaves no oil residue.This water soluble cleaner is non-toxic, biodegradable, non-flammable, and has low vapor.

Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver ( 2.5 oz tub $5.75 at jerrysartarama.com)
Makes cleaning, conditioning, and preserving your brushes easier. This unique product works on oils, acrylics, watercolor, varnishes, stains, shellac and most synthetic finishes. It will also restore most hardened brushes to like-new condition.

Go Green alternatives to make at Home:
Soften hard paintbrushes in hot vinegar for a few minutes. Then wash paintbrush in mild soap and warm water and let dry.

A similar tip from TotalArtSoul.com, take a glass jar and place a bar of ivory soap inside. Fill with enough water to cover, and drop your brushes in. The soap makes a grey slurry mix in the jar. Let sit for a couple of days then remove and rinse with soap and water and let dry. This tip is supposed to work especially well for brushes that are hard and crusty with paint.

If you have any cleaning tips for brushes or for the artist studio, feel free to share. It is a great way to help other creatives learn new ideas about their craft.

WIP update & Etsy Love

Quick update to an in-progress illo... the pencil sketch was below. It has been a busy few weeks juggling many different projects and balancing some custom work too. I miss sharing and visiting with everyone, so I thought I would post today with a brief progress report of sorts. :)
Illustration is progressing and the book is coming together nicely. Lots of custom work from my Etsy store which is always fun and a design gig assisting a trade show. The year is off to a busy start!

WIP - Children's Book Illustration

Happy New Year!! So exciting, like a blank canvas 2011 is spread before me ready and waiting. I always like getting the new year off on the right foot and have been doing A LOT of organizing and creative brainstorming on how to improve and expand my artistic endeavors. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and is feeling fresh and creatively renewed.
Since I was pretty much absent during the month of December with deadlines looming, guests, and holiday festivities... I am trying to incorporate better time management for my blog into 2011. While I would love to be here with you all everyday, it is not a schedule I can manage. Hopefully you will continue to pop in and forgive my delinquent posts and visits. I promise to at least post weekly! :)

For now I leave you with a WIP from the childrens book I am about 70% through. By the end of the month the illustrations will be finished! I can't wait to see this charming story in print. Fannie is a multi-talented artist that I met through blogging who continues 
to impress me with her creative energy - spanning many different mediums, 
Below she shares with us all a bit of what makes her such a unique talent, 
besides being a working artist who makes the time to assist several charities 
that are close to her heart.

" Most of us produce art that we enjoy creating 
rather than produce art that is saleable.  And if 
you’re blessed, you do both--produce art that is 
creatively satisfying and saleable.  I think that’s 
a dream goal of every artist." - Fannie Narte

How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process varies and changes from day to day and 
project to project.  But generally, it involves three steps: 
research, writing and creating the piece.

With your fiber art, do you begin with a sketch, or just work 
through to your finished piece?
When creating a realistic piece, I usually work from a sketch.  
When I create an abstract piece, sometimes I work from a sketch, 
but most of the time my ideas drive my creative process.  
During this phase, I continuously audition different elements 
and consider different techniques and colors until a pleasing 
design develops. The machine quilting or hand stitching is
the last thing I do before binding the finished piece.

If I’m creating a piece for an exhibit with a specific theme, 
I will gather all the information I can about that theme by 
doing extensive research online and reading books, making visits 
to a location if applicable, and conduct interviews by phone or 
e-mail. When I think I’ve gathered enough information, then I’ll 
journal my thoughts and ideas. It’s a way for me to understand 
the theme on a personal level. During this writing process,
questions surface, which means I need to do more research.

This writing/research process may repeat itself until I “feel” 
that I’m ready to begin creating the piece.

In the busy-ness of meeting project deadlines, sometimes the fun in 
creating gets lost in the business of our work.  When this happens, 
I create challenge pieces.  I challenge myself by imposing limits such 
as time, technique, tools, and materials.  As an example, if I decide 
to create a postcard which is 4” x 6”, I will give myself one hour 
to complete it and choose a number, say, “three,” for example.  
I will only use three techniques such as thread quilting, appliqué and 
painting; three tools such as a sewing machine, paint brush, and 
credit card; and three materials such as pellon, fabric paper and crystals.  
One of the many benefits of this activity is that it helps me see things 
with fresh eyes and it takes me out of “my norm.” It’s also quick, 
fun and creatively satisfying.

For those of us who have never tried fiber art, how would you recommend
starting?
I guess the same process that I use to create a piece would apply here:
Research, Write, Create.  You might begin by studying the world of fiber 
art on the internet, by visiting your local library or bookstore, local
galleries, etc., to learn what kind of fiber art makes you excited.  The
studio of a fiber artist may contain supplies found in a painter's studio, 
a weaver's studio, a jewelry, beader, stamper, scrapbooker or knitter's
studio, etc.  A good place to begin your online research is Studio Art 
Quilt Associates <http://www.saqa.com/> (SAQA) and Surface Design
Association<http://dev.surfacedesign.org/about.php>(SDA).
Next write down your thoughts.  How did you feel when you saw certain
pieces?  Were you drawn to them because of its color, its texture or maybe
it connected you to a childhood memory?  Do you like realism art, abstract,
impressionism, etc.?  In this writing process, you’ll discover a place to
begin creating your unique fiber art.  Next comes the fun part—shopping!

Then comes the messy part—create!


You are active in different charity organizations/groups, using your 
artwork to gain awareness. How can other artists become involved?
Yes, I am very active in donating my art quilts to benefit Alzheimer’s
research through the Alzheimer's Art Quilt
Initiative <http://www.alzquilts.org/index.html>(AAQI) founded by world
renowned quilter Ami Simms. My quilts are sold in the monthly AAQI online
auction<http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltauction.html>or they can be
purchased each year in Houston at the International Quilt Festival.

I joined the AAQI organization in 2007 with a promise of raising $1,000 
from the sale of my pieces.  To date, I am grateful to report that my art
quilts<http://www.alzquilts.org/narte.html>have raised over $4,000.
After three years, I met Ami in person for the first time at the Houston
International Quilt Festival last month.  It was a memorable meeting.  
My family and I serenaded Ami, the AAQI volunteers and customers with 
a song.

I also donate my art to organizations that support cancer research in memory
of my father who passed from lung cancer.

Finding a non-profit organization to support is easy because of the
internet.  Through your search, you may find an organization that needs your
illustration skills for a fund raising program they already have in place.  
If you find an organization that doesn’t have a program in place, but which
appeals to your heart, you may offer your services to illustrate their logo
or event posters, etc.  Connecting with a non-profit is a great marketing
tool and will broaden your customer base.

What is the one piece of advice that you would share with aspiring creatives
in a challenging economy.
“One” piece of advice . . . hmmm.  “One” gold piece.  I guess the answer to
that would have something to do with how you market your art and yourself.  
It seems that people either buy art that they visually love or people buy art
created by artists they love.  If your work isn’t being seen by the right
people, you won’t sell your art no matter how great your work is or what the
state of the economy is.

There are usual avenues that artists take to market their work such as web
presence, art fairs, challenge groups, etc.  Think “unusual.”  Discover what
makes you different from other illustrators and target your marketing
efforts.

For example, as an illustrator, what makes your work unique in that world?  
Are you a musician and an illustrator?  Could you merge the two in your
marketing efforts?  Could you write a silly jingle, add illustrations to the
song, record it on a CD and use it to market yourself?
Are you a history professor and an illustrator?  Maybe you could write an
academic article, include your illustrations and send it to targeted
publications.  You could also present your project to students in your
community and/or at local libraries.
Are you a homemaker and illustrator?  Could you write a humorous short story
or poem based on a personal experience as a homemaker and add illustrations
and send it to Woman’s Day magazine or other publications?  You get the
idea, right?  Keep thinking creatively and you’ll find your own unique way
to market your art.

Regardless of the state of the economy, most of us produce art that we enjoy
creating rather than produce art that is saleable.  And if you’re blessed,
you do both--produce art that is creatively satisfying and saleable.  
I think that’s a dream goal of every artist.


You are awarded a shopping spree in a local art store and have only 3
minutes to grab as many supplies as possible... what would you grab?
This was my first answer:  What would I grab?  I would grab my two
daughters, who are with me, arm them with a shopping cart each and let them
go. Here’s my second real answer:  I probably would grab sets of my favorite 
art supply Neocolor II wax crayons paints, paint brushes, paint accessories 
and canvases.

Being Thankful

There is a lot to be thankful for this year.... my three very active kiddos, my DH and of course all family & friends, creative work that keeps me busy and provides income to help support my family and so much more. If you are celebrating Thanksgiving this week, I wish a very happy day surrounded by people who bring you joy and laughter .For those of you who don't celebrate this particular holiday, I pass along my happy wishes that you are surrounded (and thankful) for the people who lift you up and keep you moving in your life. :)

November Artist Highlight - Joseph Allen Designs

For this month's artist highlight, we have Joseph Allen Designs. He graciously offered to take time from his busy schedule creating hand-stamped, inspirational, jewelry designs. Enjoy the interview everyone!

"Do something you love to do. Often when I am creating something new I ask myself this question: "If I sold 20 of these a day would I still enjoy making them?" - Joseph Allen

How did you become interested in jewelry design?
I often share with others the story of how jewelry found me. It was 1987 and
a beautiful spring day. I was hanging out with a friend of mine after
school. He wanted to get his bicycle from his brother who just so happened
to work at a jewelry manufacturing company. He went in to see his brother
and came out with a job. "Cool, maybe I could get one too!", I said. And I
did! I continued to work with various companies throughout the years until I
finally decided to become self employed in 1999.

What is your favorite metal to work with/why?
This would be a toss-up between Silver and Gold. Gold is definitely the
easiest to work with but the lower cost of silver allows me to have more
freedom in my designs.

Is there another artistic medium that you haven't tried yet, but would 
like to?
Yes, metal clay. I am often amazed at the creative designs many artists are
able to make using PMC. (Precious metal clay) There are so many hand stamped
designs out there that I'm always trying hard to keep my designs different
and I think this is an area that needs to be explored. I'm hoping I'll be
able to explore this area after the holidays.

What part of creating jewelry is the most appealing to you as an artist?
Pricing it. Ha Ha, just kidding. It would probably be the process of putting
it together. There is the designing, carving, cutting, casting, etc. but it
is the part when you're getting the new design put together that is probably
the most exciting to me. I've seen it in my head but then I'm able to see it
turn into something real. 

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring artists?
I've thought about this question for quite a while and decided to keep it
simple and go back to the root of all aspiring artists. Do something you
love to do. Often when I am creating something new I ask myself this
question: "If I sold 20 of these a day would I still enjoy making them?"

You can make one piece of jewelry for anyone in history... who, what would that piece 
be and why?
Judy Garland. I've always had this idea for an 18k yellow gold and platinum
ring. It is kind of a complex design but to put it simply it would have 3
diamonds set on each side of a large 2 carat round ruby. I think it would of
went well with her ruby slippers.

More Promotion Tips...

Something many of us can relate to is the struggle of wearing a business cap with a smock, typing and emailing while keeping an eye on the paintbrush and pencils... oh promotion you fickle beast!
It is hard to switch gears between creative and business, but necessary if you want to pursue a creative freelance career. Here are a few tips that may help with the promotion process.
Scratch the business card and stick to a fantastic postcard. Print up a postcard with a recent image of your art. Keep that image front and center on the postcard and add your contact info and website on the back. Remember simple, to the point and no clutter. Consider your postcard as one big business card! Stay regular in your mailings too. While some of my friends mail as often as 1x a month, I tend to do it quarterly throughout the year and sometimes adding in an additional targeted mailing.
Internet = Virtual Gallery. Get on as many social media sites as you can manage and promote your art. Use facebook, twitter, the hive and whatever else you choose to build up an audience by. It’s a great way for friends/family to see your progress too! Having an online presence for your art will maximize your exposure, build a fanbase and possibly lead to a few sales, a great project or even a show. Don't be shy and spread the word about your work - be proud of what you do!
Follow up on leads. Start making connections and keep a close eye on them - a great oppotunity may be right in front of you. Pay attention to what people say - listen carefully and don't be afraid to speak up about how you can help. Networking/Referrals are wonderful IF you act on them. Follow up on leads by email or phone - whichever way you are more comfortable... just make sure to reach out. If you don't keep that connection open you will soon be forgotten. Investigate any opportunity large or smal. And keep some postcards or other visuals handy. Mini-moo cards easily fit into a bag or wallet. Take it from me, you want something at your fingertips at all times. I am still kicking myself for missing out on an opportunity years back, when I was asked for a card by an individual in the publishing industry and I had nothing on me! Be prepared you never know when or where you next lead may come.

I have been neglecting my blog this week, but thankfully there was a popular interview with the talented Diana Evans to keep many of you entertained. :) My sister was married last Sunday in a lovely ceremony beneath blue skies and surrounded by trees in full autumn glory. She looked stunning as and I am so happy for her and her new husband! This week I have been busy catching up on creative endeavors, and household stuff too, which put my blog posts on hold. It was with great delight though to come back to this lovely award! Thank you Michele at Mushroom Tender for including me in the talented group of artists that you awarded. Be sure to visit her blog and see all the goodies she is working on.
Lastly, I wanted to share some cute little recycled art pieces that I worked on for Halloween. I love these recycled charms, they are light and fun. My kids wear them as zipper pulls, and my daughter likes them on a simple chain.

October Artist Highlight - Diana Evans

The lovely, talented and business savy Diana Evans is the October Artist Highlight. She graciously took time from her busy studio schedule to answer a few questions about her career and views as an artist. Grab a chair, sit back and relax while you read her wonderful interview below.

"You will be successful if you stay true to your own style and your work." - diana evans

What is your favorite medium to work in and how would you describe your
technique?
I love working with various mediums. I love ink and paper, watercolor, acrylics on canvas, wood and Pyrography and also digital work.
When I work on my picture books I always work with my large trusty sketchbook and work on the drafts in pencil. I usually then send the pencil sketches to the client for approval. Once the pencil sketches are approved, I move to the ink part of the process. Still using my sketchbook I create the ink outlined work. Once I finish up the ink piece, I remove all of the pencil marks and scan the piece into my computer. Once scanned, I open the piece up in Photoshop and lose myself in adding color to the piece. It is amazing what you can do with digital color and texture. Then the illustration is complete and I move to the next piece. Depending on the client, I either work on one and finish one completely or work on several pencil pieces for approval and several ink and color pieces all at once.

Is there a medium that you haven't tried yet, but would like to?
I keep purchasing this stuff called Paperclay and I plan on creating art dolls with it, but sadly I haven’t had a chance to try it out. So I would have to say Paperclay is a medium I have heard a lot about and would love to try.

What part of creating an illustration is the most fun?
I feel so blessed to be able to wake up and head to my Studio each and every day. I wake up to create and I have to pinch myself every once and a while to make sure I am not dreaming all this stuff up. The best part of illustration for me is sitting and working in my sketchbook. There is a freedom about it and you can bring your sketchbooks with you where ever you go.
While using my sketchbook I never run the battery low or delete something by accident. I also love seeing our son’s reactions to my work. At the end of each day I show him my work and he always says the sweetest things to me as he reviews it. It really fills the heart and soul and that is why I love my work.
I love knowing that even when I am gone from this World, a little part of me will be left behind in a picture book, a painting or a sculpture. I feel that leaving a footprint in the World is important and this is another reason I feel blessed to be doing what I do.

Describe what your dream project would be.
My dream project would be to work on a picture book with Gene Simmons. I think it would be hilarious.

What piece of advice would you give to aspiring artists?

This question is very easy for me right now. Whatever you do, never try to be someone else. Always stay true to you and your craft. We all have our favorite Illustrators and Artists out there, never try to mimic them. Use them for inspiration. You will be successful if you stay true to your own style and your work. My style is very different and you either love it or hate it. The hardest thing for me was hearing from the people that didn’t like my style. One day I was so stressed out about what an Agent’s opinion of my style, that I finally decided my work was about me and it had to make me happy too. This new thinking changed my journey for the better.
The other piece of advice I can offer aspiring artists and illustrators would be not to take on projects that you’re not passionate about. At the end of the day we are all doing something to make money and earn a living, but you don’t have to work on something you don’t like or feel comfortable with just because you need the money. Work and have passion for your art and the jobs will come. In the mean time live within your means and always believe in your dreams.

Work, work, work… get a website, share your work, hone your craft, your style and market your work. Participate in weekly fun challenges and just create once and a while for the fun of it. You never want to lose your love for what you do. Passion about what you do can make a huge difference in your overall success. Avoid Spec work. Clients should never ask you to create something and then say they may use it or may pay you. Also, avoid a lot of illustration contests. This is really spec work wearing a costume. Your time is valuable so use it the way you want to use it. Run your Illustration work like a Business. Why do you Network?

net•work (net-wurk) an association of individuals having a common interest, formed to provide mutual assistance, helpful information, or the like

I probably began networking about a year out of college. Back then it was pretty much via letter or phone call or even over lunch, that would be "old school" networking. Now, it's mainly done online through forums and online networks (linkedin immediately comes to mind), blogging, as well as via phone and over coffee - at a store with Wifi. Times have certainly changed, and for me, so has networking. Where it was once all about getting a job, networking has become a "social hour" for me. I find that the creative people I meet through these various online sites, have become a wealth of support, information, talent, hope, generosity and inspiration. Online friends across the country... actually the globe, who offer a kind word, who take a moment out of a busy day to drop in and say hello and who recharge my creative soul. Sure, networking is still a great way to visualize what I do, which could lead to being noticed by a new publisher or art director, but it is so much more! So my question to you is, why do you Network?

Halloween Happenings

I have been so inspired by the many, many festive Halloween illo's that are pouncing up all over the blog o'sphere, that I decided to share my favorite from last year. I am working on a new one for Halloween 2010 but it is coming along slowly... between sketches for a wonderful children's book that I am in the midst of illustrating. Sometimes it is nice to put one project down and pick up another, I tend to feel more refreshed and creatively charged that way.

September Artist Highlight: Vanessa Brantley-Newton

As promised below is my very first artist highlight with the incredibly talented and supremely inspiring Vanessa Brantley-Newton. I have had the pleasure of getting to know her through blogging and couldn't imagine an artist more perfect to kick off my new monthly interviews with. What a thrill that she was able to take time out of her busy schedule to share a bit of creative insight with us all. What part of creating an illustration is most fun for you?  
Coming up with the characters.  I am a people watcher so there are always some character 
that is wanting and waiting to be put on to paper or created on the computer.

How did you become involved in childrens book illustration?
I had been working as a phlebotomist ( One who draws blood) for over 25 years. I had
always been doing illustration work on the side, but only got small jobs and commissions here
and there. I went to F.I.T. for fashion illustrations, but it was during the early 80's when a lots
of black illustrators where not getting the jobs in the field of fashion illustration. Of course this
deeply sadden me and I had to work so I did phlebotomy. My mom was my teacher and taught
me well. I became one the best phlebotomist in the state of NJ. I worked with children with
terminal cancer and other blood diseases as well as Neo Natal and Oncology patients as well.
Knowing that I went to school for illustration and couldn't get a job it the field was driving me
crazy. I started working on a different kind of portfolio. I began to study children's books and
the love for them was great! I had a passion for them. I had already been working with children,
but now I wanted to illustrate their world. I took a couple of courses at the School of Visual arts
in NYC and became even more inspired. After I lost my job in phlebotomy in 1998 and my
husband lost his job, we needed to put food on the table. I will say this, "There is nothing like
a need to make or inspire someone to pull out what they have put away and deemed over,
to get them moving in the right direction!" I was HUNGRY!!!!! I started devouring children's
book and researching the publishing industry. I purchased every book on children's illustration
and writing. I would take our last dollars and buy a book because I wanted to know about
this passion I had for this thing. Learned all I could and then I created my first real portfolio
of children's illustration and sent out letters to agents and publishers. My little sister, Coy,
helped me with the letters and all. I stayed positive even when I got bad news. One day a
friend came to visit and I had my work all spread out on our dinning room table. We knew
each others from church. She asked me who was doing all this work and I told her me.
She asked me did I know what she did for a living? I told her no. We never really talked
about work. She said, "Vanessa I work for Scholastic Book and I love your work!!!" and
the rest shall we say, is history.

Is there a medium that you would like to explore but haven't yet?
Yes!!! Working with illustration and photography together. Like Mo Willems and Veronica Ball.

You are in the studio and have a deadline looming, how do you get in
the creative zone?  
I have to meditate and really get myself in a good space and place. I put on my, 
Get Me Going Music, and look for inspiration. Then take a deep breathe and go for it!!!

What’s the best advice you were ever given about how to be more creative?  
One person said to me, " It's like contour drawing. Contour drawing is when you put pencil 
or pen to paper and you look at your subject, but not your paper and let it go".  That is what 
it is like for me when being more creative.  I don't know where this is going to lead, but I will 
trust the process. You can't be concerned about making the prefect picture, but you must 
enjoy the process. Allowing one's self to be stretched and provoked even to do something 
crazy and different. I think we care to much about what everyone else is going to say or feel 
about our work instead of enjoying ourselves and allowing ourselves the joy of being 
or having more creative expression and freedom.

If you could be any famous painting in the world today...
I would be....The Mona Lisa! Okay you knew that was coming LOL!!!!

Creatitity is not a gift from the Gods - How to establish a creative ritual

I have my vitamin pill and my music, sit in the same seat, and the papers are all arranged in the same places. The cumulative purpose of doing these things the same way every day seems to be a way of saying to the mind, you’re going to be dreaming soon." - Stephen King

Being an artist requires hard work and dedication. It means hours of honing a craft and flexing lots of creative muscle. What was happening to my creative muscle? Daily life seemed to be extracting more and more of my time and I was feeling the creative loss - even becoming grumpy about it. Then I discovered an amazing book "The Creative Habit" by Twyla Tharp. It made me realize that something had to change. The next day I began to establish a creative ritual. Why not try it out for yourself?

First a bit of science
Circadian rhythms of arousal and mental alertness mean that certain times of day are especially conducive to focused creative work. The effect is amplified when familiar items and surroundings become associative triggers for a better creative state of mind.

Pick your creative ritual
Think of positive habits that are unique to you. A few things to consider:
• What time of day am I most productive? I'm a morning gal. It feels great to begin my day in the studio. In the evening, I respond to emails, blogsurf or fold laundry.
• Soothing or stimulating. Which will better assist creative flow? Going for a 5 mile run before heading to the studio may supercharge you, but not me!
• Is this habit reasonable? Your habit should be simple and not require great expense or lots of gear to complete. Skydiving is thrilling, but it's not a realistic daily activity.
Now you have a preliminary ritual. Dedicate time during your most productive part of the day to focus on creative work. Don't be afraid to sample a ritual or two. If taking a walk around the neighborhood doesn't work, try doodling with a cup of coffee instead. Once you find the creative routine that works for you it will become a mental trigger for your creative zone.

Buzz kills
My creative zone enemy... interruptions. While some can't be avoided, others can. During creative time, I close the doors to my studio and turn off my email, IM and cell phone. This keeps me focused without the pesty bleeps, blings and rings.

Fun too!
Creativity still involves spontaneity. Since developing better creative habits, I have more "Aha!" moments than before. My mind isn't cluttered with "stuff" while I am encased in my creative zone so I feel more focused on my artistic goals with a better sense of purpose.

Don't get discouraged
Creative rituals ingrain your creative efforts into a daily routine - no matter how chaotic, stressful, or just plain nutty your day is. Stay focused on your goal of achieving a creative ritual. Before you know it the creative ritual will be an enjoyable and rewarding part of your day!

WIP - Children's Book Illustration

Above: an illo for the latest childrens book that I am working on. As you can see the final sketch did not deviate from the final illo. This page was a joy to create. Why? Well it was fun to paint... I mean seriously, how can you be grumpy painting a cow? But the best part was that the client was completely on board with my vision for this page right out of the gate. Truly, I knocked it out of the park at conception. If memory serves the client's exact words were "I just LOVE the cow. It's perfect!"

Children's books are what I consider a "happy challenge". The author is dedicated to bringing about the best possible visuals for the story and sometimes the ideas that he/she has are not ones you share. This is a challenge in any client/creative relationship and one that I have worked hard to master. A great (and simple) tip for those who struggle with this issue: remember, the project is theirs. A client approached you to create something for them. They love your style, oh and ah over your talent but really just want you to execute a timely project for them that tackles a creative issue. They are paying you for this project and when completed, it's theirs. Consider it your creative mantra... I am doing this for my client, not myself. Whether it is a commission, a children's book, or a company brochure - you are being paid to produce something for them. It's not personal, it's business and if they walk away happy then they will return with future work. Want to create something just for you? Set up an easel and indulge yourself with an afternoon of painting. In the meantime, work alongside your client to produce a piece that will be highly satisfying. Keep an open mind to their suggestions/ideas and they will give you the same respect. Listen carefully to client comments, add your creative input and move forward in a positive direction on the project. Best case scenario - a great new piece for your portfolio and the worse case.... a great new painting to display in your home. Sounds like a win/win to me.

listen to your inner voice

Sometimes it isn't always easy to hear that inner voice, many times it is just a whisper rather than a shout. When I do listen to that voice and give it my full attention it rarely leads me down the wrong path, but rather brings me further into my own creative progression.

Art is constantly evolving, as do the artists who create the art. What you see on your screen today is part of this creative evolution. It was time to bring more to my seat at the blogger table... something that other creatives could sink their teeth into and (hopefully) walk away with a belly full of inspiration.

Plan on stopping in for a visit and bring a big appetite. Dig in with some mouthwatering art, reviews, tips, industry news, monthly artist interviews and giveaways. The menu may have changed, but the friendly service stays the same. I will continue to keep you abreast of my progress in the studio with WIPs, promotions and more. For some time, I have been mulling over my blog and its use/effectiveness in the creative blogosphere. Personally, it is exciting to get on and connect with other creatives. I have made so many lovely friends through blogging that are a source of inspiration, hope and encouragement... but have I done the same? With this in mind, I have decided upon a new direction for my blog, one that I hope will remain true to me as an artist/illustrator, but which also provides other creatives with useful content, reviews, tutorials and much more. I have been hard at work devising this plan, and can't wait to launch my new and improved creative blog next Monday, August 23 at high noon... yes, I still have a touch of the dramatic, but don't we all?
This creative progression is one that I hope will benefit all of you in some way (big or small) and assist with your own creative endeavors. Now I need to get back to work fine tuning things... Have a great week, and be sure to check back with me next week.

The Kids of Dandelion Township a childrens story that I illustrated is now available for download on Kindle. I am constantly amazed at how publishing is evolving. I don't personally own an e-reader, but am so tempted to purchase one, as it makes titles so much more readily available. Although, having a tangible item to hold and cherish and read from, is also a pleasure. What do you prefer and why?

Busy day today - lots of deadlines and still working up some of the final spot illustrations for a children's book project. The sun is shining, I am about to turn up the tunes and just be productive!

Thought I would share a commission I completed that will be used in an invitation design. This was a fun piece, as birches have always been a favorite subject of mine. They look great in any setting and in any season.

While this weekend we had many happy moments to share, there was also a very sad one. A classmate of my daughters passed away after a long illness. Dealing with death for an adult is never easy and for a young girl to be acquainted with this hard part of life, at such a young and impressionable age, is equally difficult. As a small tribute to this sweet young lady, who forever has left an impression on my daughters heart, I am posting this angel. For one so young, with such a strong spirit and happy smile, we can only imagine that she is joyfully dancing and singing with the angels.

A little 5x7" painting that I created last week and wanted to share. This was a gift, but since I enjoy working in these smaller sizes - they are like mini-creative boosts to the artistic soul - that you may see more to come throughout the summer.

Bauer has landed! I am so excited to announce "My Dog Bauer is a Thief" is now available on Amazon.com. This is the first children's book I have illustrated where the author gave me a wide berth on the creative freedom front, so it is truly a project close to my heart.
Thank you to all my blog friends for your encouragement and cheer with this project. It seems bittersweet now that it is officially completed and out in the world for all to see/read/comment/evaluate... etc! Hopefully the reviews will be positive, since it is such a charming childrens story.
Now I am moving on and finishing up the final sketches for my next childrens story. Hoping to start some spot illo's this week. Have a great day and I will see you around the blog-o-sphere! ;)

Since this children's book is about to drop any day... and be available on Amazon soon, I created a bookmark for the author to have.
Reading is so important, and I believe it is so important to foster a love of reading at a young age. Feel free to share this bookmark with any "youngsters" that you know. It would make a fun creative project to download it and make it your own... add a tassle, some glitter or beads, mount it on a pretty cardstock, it is up to where your imagination takes you. Send along pictures too - I would love to see Bauer's bookmark being enjoyed!

What fun it was visiting this blog Three Muses, that I discovered from visiting and viewing the lovely creations that Diana comes up with for the challanges. In my recent blog travels, I discovered another gem of a site - Peppercorn Minis. And look what I was surprised to see that I won during her giveaway, these charming basket minis! I have them displayed in my studio on a shelf with some other treasures, but I thought to show them off here as well. She is very talented, offers a fun blog with more mini designs, and has an Etsy store as well.

As many of you probably know, I am an animal lover at heart... this piece came to mind when I read the IF prompt LINKED this week.
Humans have about 98.4% of our DNA in common with chimpanzees. This genetic information has provided insight to human-relatedness to other great apes such as the gorilla. Humans are more closely related to chimpanzees and gorillas than either of them are to orangutans.

IF - Rescue

I have already seen many of the wonderful entries submitted for the theme at IF this week, "Rescue". Seeing the entries made me think, as I often do, about how so many talented individuals from across the globe, can develop such different ideas and works of art on the same topic. It's the artists slant on the world, so varied and deeply rooted into who that person is, how he/she chooses to create, and speak through their art. Really powerful. Yet - what makes this all possible, besides talent and dedication to craft? What makes art possible is my take on IF this week - imagination. Without imagination what does an artist truly have? Can you be an artist without it... is raw talent enough?
This recycled pencil sketch is my "rough" interpretation of imagination. How we need to rescue, revive and foster imagination in ourselves and those around us. It is why I LOVED teaching art classes to children. Their innocent and thoughtful outlook on the world around them was filled with burgeoning imagination and life, it was inspiring on so many levels. As adults, it can be so hard to maintain our imagination - to keep it fresh. But we must, since it is such an important part of who we are.

I strive to keep my imagination alive and you know what else? I do believe in fairies.

Here is a book cover illustration that I created for a client in CA. She is self-publishing this charming story and I was happy to assist her in the development of the cover.

My contribution is this mixed media ATC of a butterfly with hearts in it's wing. To me the butterfly is the perfect symbol of hope and rebirth.

I wanted to wish everyone a safe and happy NEW YEAR night surrounded by good people, good food and good times!
Normally I don't make resolutions for the new year, I would rather just fly by the seat of my pants... but for 2010 there are a few items on my resolution "to do list". First more patience with my little bambinos, Second more creative time for me and Third better organization in my life so that I won't be so impatient and have more creative, studio time. =)
And yeah, it would be nice to build in time for some yoga because I always feel great afterwards.
Enjoy the new year everyone. It is like a huge blank canvas just itching to have all sorts of colorful paint spread across it... a new story waiting to be told and loaded with possibilities.

Poster Design

One of my favorite things about the upcoming holiday season is seeing the Nutcracker performed. I just love this timeless, whimsical story as well as the music of Tchaikovsky - pure magic! It should remind us all that there should always be room for dancing, laughter and most importantly, boundless imagination in our lives.

This project was a joy. I discussed my concept with the creative director/owner of the dance company and conducted the shoot with some of the dancers. Back to the studio where I worked the images into this dreamy landscape.

Still keeping quite busy - the design work is rolling in while I manage to work sketches for (2) children's stories. I would love to have some pencil drafts soon... or at least sneak peaks, with the clients approval. I hope everyone is well, and plan on doing some "visiting" over my morning coffee tomorrow. Have a great night.

As the weather grows cooler here in New England, I become more focused on the approaching holidays. While Halloween is always a wonderful time, I do find my thoughts wondering more and more to Christmas... the behemoth of holidays! Since Christmas just happens to be my favorite holiday and knowing how busy I will be during December (those holiday cookies and candies don't just make themselves), I do my very best to begin working on presents early. Last year, I was neck deep in scarves, this year it has been (wait for it).... jewelry! I must admit that during my down-time, all I want to do is grab my round nose pliers and dig into my stash of gemstones, metals and freshwater pearls! Isn't it fun to be creative, no matter what the medium?

October KRU is out!

Ta dah! Here is the latest issue of Kidz Rule USA, which is the monthly family magazine that I work on. I am extra proud of this issue because one of my photographs was selected for the cover! Still busy wrapping up design projects and sketching, sketching, sketching for the children's book AND trying to get a jump on some of my Christmas presents. Yes, I did say Christmas presents - I have been "creatively crazy" knitting and wire wrapping some jewelry and embellishing journals.

This is the time of year that I feel there isn't even a spare moment to come up for air. And from visiting many of my other creative blog buddies, I can tell that I am not alone in this matter.

I spent a little time today sitting on my sun porch and sketching. This was one of the completed items, a small decorative pumpkin with a lovely stem. Sometimes it is nice just to give the mind and hands a bit of creative workout - for no reason other than to play with color, shape and form. It felt good to sit in the sun and draw and take "time out of life".

perspective

I love those moments when something special occurs to my mindset. Usually prompted by a person, event, discussion or or even a good read and then click, things just seem to fall into place. Like a fog has lifted and my perspective on life clears. When I stop asking - am I doing the right thing, am I on the right path?
I had a moment like that last night when I read an essay that my daughter wrote at school which not only made me smile, but brought tears to my eyes. I was blessed with a wonderful feeling that yes, I am doing things right. That all the long nights, stressed out moments, mom guilt and constant balancing act between family and work has been worth it and will still be worth it. =)

My mom is very creative, helpful and clever. She is creative because she makes me jewelry like necklaces, bracelets, hats and scarves. She helps me with my homework and she tests me on my spelling words. Mom is clever because she makes very good food. She drives me to places all the time. I want to be like my mom.

Good Morning All! I know it has been too long since my last post - but I am back and ready to keep everyone more up to date on my creative happenings. Lately, I have been very busy working on design and photography assignments, and in the coming months I will be working on a childrens book! The past few months have been busy, there were some wonderful creative developments and a few disappointments too, but I am in the studio with renewed vigor/inspiration and have truly missed you guys. Can't wait to catch up on all you have been doing ~ plan on my stopping by over my cup of coffee this week. =)

The first is Scarletbits.com. Lots of fun goodies here, especially if you use Photoshop. I have downloaded some wonderful brushes and backgrounds. Lots of news and tips too, so it's really worth a visit. The other site is Designmoo.com - another jam-packed website loaded with goodies, tips, info, tutorials and more. I like to check in with these sites weekly over a cup of am coffee... it is a relaxing way to begin the day, and I often find something fun or learn something new in the process.
